Frequently Asked Questions

Services at Extra Steps are considered direct pay.  This means you will be responsible for payment at the time of service and we will not engage with your insurance provider.  However, if you wish to seek reimbursement from your insurance carrier, we can provide the necessary documentation, including:

  • Questions to ask your insurance company prior to evaluation so you understand your financial responsibilities in regards to out of network therapy treatment.
  • Initial evaluation report
  • Progress notes (every 12 weeks)
  • Detailed receipts once a month with industry-standard codes
  • Package plans at reduced rate
  • Multi-discipline reduced rates

Prior to the evaluation, the therapist will review the intake form and other relevant documents (e.g., IEP or prior evaluations). The therapist will discuss your child’s background and the reasons for seeking therapy. They will observe your child’s skills and conduct standardized testing. After the evaluation, the clinician will provide recommendations on whether therapy is beneficial for your child.  You and your child’s therapist will then collaborate on goals for your therapy sessions.

Children typically see a therapist for 60 minutes, one time a week, although it varies based on the child’s needs and abilities.  50 minutes of the session are active treatment with 10 minutes of family collaboration.  Evaluations are also 60 minutes.

Yes, the same therapist that conducts your child’s evaluation, will also be treating your child each week.

The number of sessions varies based on a child’s needs and goals.  Your therapist will work with you to monitor and adjust goals as needed throughout the therapeutic process.

Yes, we are a family based clinic and strongly believe in carry over from the clinic to the home with parents continuing strategies during the week between appointments.  Parents can observe sessions, learn techniques alongside a therapist or remain in the waiting area.  Sometimes children do best with a family member with them, at other times they learn best on their own.  Each situation and child is unique.  Therapist daily notes are available on our electronic medical record software as well as home exercise programs.  Therapists always recap what was worked on and a child’s response during each session if a family member is not present during the session.

With your permission we send major medical records to your pediatrician and can arrange other collaborations as requested by you.  Also with permission we can collaborate with your child’s school team and provide school observations.

Although the clinic based service model is our primary model, we do provide in-home, in community and telehealth services as needed and as makes sense for your child’s goals and situation.
